Painted eagle with wood burnt edges

This 16 inch pine plaque took about 3 hours to paint. I was very nervous trying to tackle this project.

Shawn’s dad asked bought the letter “D-E-E-R-I-N-G B-A-N-J-O” from the states and wanted to make something similar to the Deering Banjo logo. So the photo he sent me had yellow letters with black outline, so me and Shawn painted those letters and he had sealed with with varathan (like 60 coats of varnish… you can eat off of it)

Then the hard part. I attempted wood burning on a small sample pine wood… the impact of the eagle eyes were NOT there, I used oil color and water color pencil crayons (when adding water it appears to look like paint), it did NOT look good either. Then one day i sat down and decided to just do it. I just used acrylic paints, I sketched out the silhouette of the eagle and started to mix white, black, orange, yellow and brown colors on my palette.

I started out painted the beak. Yellow, brown and dark brown. It looks OK-ay to me. Then I added some texture around the beak by dotting some yellow and greys. I used my medium sized brush loaded with white paint and a dash of grey and started to add strokes to the feathers.

Then I painted the dark brown feathers with one shade as i didn’t want to take away from the white feathers. I used a thing “0″ (zero) brush and used dark dark brown and light brown 1 inch strokes to look like feather.

3 hours later I am done. I am pretty happy with the outcome. This is only 1 part of 3, so more to come shortly.

I used my Walnut hollow woodburning tool  #5594 shading tool tip for the ivy leaves (as i call them) and just a calligraphy point for the branches in between. That didn’t take long…

Amazon Ebook cover

I think all E-book covers are cheesy looking.  (Don’t you?)

So I was contacted about creating an ebook cover for a book coming out on Amazon (Links to follow, it is said to be launching today…) I was given the title a few small details and told “You can do whatever you want” (LOVE THAT)

I was messaged at 1pm, I got home at 3, and this is due TODAY. Boo. Its now 5PM.

That was my first attempt. It was a photo I took in Kingston when I went there in the summer time with Shawn. It is the entrance to Fort Henry. Because of the tight deadline I did not have the time to go out and photograph construction sites, so I had to use what i had… I thought ‘gateway’ and… You can see what happened. I photo-shopped my brains out.

They did not like it….

So onto my second idea. I did some research online for ‘construction ebooks’ and they were all very plain and boring. Something industrial in the background and an Arial font title and secondary title below…

Ta-da.

I took this photo last year at a friends condo downtown. Its one of the only photos I have of buildings. It appears that I have tens of thousands of photos of nature… but not much of anything else.

I guess I am done! I am waiting on an approval email for the last idea.

Happy Valentines Day

I made these 8 stitched cards for Valentines day.

Ah I love them all, it hard to part with them. I intended to only make about 4, but my brain went crazy. I love them all, I love the combination of light pink and brown (which is funny because that is the color scheme of my cousin @ www.jennierchao.com  )

I made a couple that my mom will be giving out to the dentist and her students parents, and some for me: for Shawn’s parents, his grandma (aka Oma) and… yes fine, one for the darling Shawn as well.

It was much fun making these, I started out with a grey cardstock 8×10 and cut it in half, then just cut out hearts left right and center. If you take a look at my gallery I used the “C” stitch which on my sewing machine is a zig zag.

The materials used was paper, glue, thread and love (lame-o)

So Happy Valentines day to all the love birds out there. May your marriages be long lasting, and if your single… its ok there is always next year.

I hope you enjoyed this. Please let me know what you think? My next idea is to stitch a few Christian bookmarks.  I hope to have them done before Febuary 28 (before my brother Alex gets home, so he can give it to his Church students)

McCarthy ducks

I drew this while in Alliston last week. We put up speaker systems and a wall mount up at Shawn’s, and i bought this little easel and frame… I was inspired by this one duck sitting on the mantel (one on left..) my original idea was to draw all the items on mantel… but i got distracted and this happened :)

Who likes paper cuts?

I sketched out a peacock with pencil and filled the edges with flowers and leaves. i then gently erased it and cut around it with an exact knife and scissor for less detailed parts. It took about 2 hours and i will never do this again.

Its great to attempt things once. Its a chinese art… paper cutting (not the exact term) but the chinese make beautiful works of art in mere minutes.

On the back side is names of all the different birds in the world (I’m sure i missed a few million)

This was fun. Won’t do it again.

So who loves paper cuts? … I don’t

Here fishy… fishy!?

I made this for mom to showcase to her kindergarden students for mandarin class.

I hoped to inspire the kids to make chinese lanterns and crafts for Chinese New Year for their parents.

Mom said the students did LOVE the fish. They kept saying ‘he is so cute.’ ha! kids are adorable. They wanted to take them home, but mom can’t let my crafts go. She has my drawings since I was in kindergarden.

Oh mom!

Happy Chinese New year all!! Hope you had a lot of good food and red envelopes.
